Whatman Grade No. 40 Ashless Quantitative Filter Paper, 1440-240 is a relatively short-fiber paper that is strongly oriented and yields a fairly neutral odor. Grading of this paper from 40 to 100 indicates what ash content is expected from different distillation procedures. Whatman No. 40 Ashless Grade Paper was specifically designed for the ashless distillation process. The paper burns down to one-third of its original volume, consumes very little paper, and leaves no residue. Whatman No. 40 Ashless Whatman Grade Paper may be used in the following processes: Ashless distillation, conventional ether filtration, and the new ether-reducing processes. An advantage of this paper for the aspirator method is that the paper funnels directly into the ash catcher, leaving the aspirator uncontaminated by any ash derived matter. Whatman No. 40 Ashless Grade Paper may be used in the Grading and Testing section of the QP Chromatography product range.
