Round glass beakers have a molded-on magnet facetted for increased magnetic strength and a consistent fluid flow. Smooth-faced type is best for stirring stir-fries and other unduly stirring operations. Magnetic stirring bars feature an increased magnetic flux throughout the entire length of the bar, which is at least three times greater than that of the magnet face. The surface of larger bars may be adversely affected by certain drugs, dyes, or chemicals. Smaller sized bars are often used in flame photometry and related techniques for indicating the position of the bar within the vessel. Glass encapsulated Alnico magnets minimize or eliminate any metallic taste, odor, or taste from the stirring bars.
