Thermoplastic elastomers are better thermally suited than neoprene alternatives in many instances. Biotainer square plastic carboys provide a strong, uniform wall thickness, making autoclaving easier on the autoclave. Thermoplastic polyethylene (neoprene) closure provides a leakproof seal and is three times better than neoprene in durability. The elastomers are chlorine and bromine activated, and provide a positive seal. The elastomers also provide excellent chemical and mechanical strength, making autoclaving safer and easier on the autoclave. In addition to being an excellent alternative to neoprene, the polycarbonate material of many of these carboys has additional advantages. For example, the surface of some carboys is sanded, making cleaning easier. In addition, the polycarbonate material also provides excellent chemical resistance and a good chemical package for storing and using corrosives.
