Wire-bound, non-illuminated Baum and specific gravity hydrometers measure specific gravity of a solution at a given temperature. Hydrometers can be read from a distance because of the swivel joint at the bulb. The lower the number on the Baum instrument, the more precise the measurement. Therefore, it is not a good idea to mix solutions with the same specific gravity. The lower the specific gravity, the less fluid will be in solution. There will be less turbidity in the solution and thus less bubbles. However, due to the low specific gravity, bubbles may be a problem in a particular solution.
